Installing a Firearms Cabinet: A Practical Guide to UK Police Compliance & Electronic Security
If you are applying for or renewing a Firearms Certificate (FAC) or Shotgun Certificate (SGC) in the UK, sorting out your storage is usually near the top of your to-do list. Your physical setup will be one of the key things your local Police Firearms Licensing Officer (FLO) inspects when they visit.
Under the Firearms Act and current Home Office guidance, certificate holders need to take all reasonable precautions to keep firearms and ammunition safely out of unauthorised hands. For most of us, getting this right comes down to one fundamental starting point: a properly specified, securely mounted cabinet.
Whether you are looking for a clean, hassle-free physical installation ahead of an inspection or want to add smart electronic monitoring to your setup, here is a practical guide to keeping your cabinet safe, secure, and fully compliant.
1. Physical Cabinet Specifications Before picking up a drill, it pays to make sure the unit itself meets official police criteria:
-
BS7558/92 Compliance: FLOs strongly prefer cabinets that conform to British Standard BS7558/92. While it isn't a strict legal mandate if the unit is built to an equally robust standard (such as continuously welded 2mm thick steel), a BS-stamped cabinet guarantees a smoother inspection. Standard office safes or key-lock cash boxes simply won't pass.
-
Locking Mechanisms: Look for cabinets fitted with double-bitted key locks or heavy-duty locking bolts. Remember, keys must stay strictly in your personal possession—or locked in a secondary key safe—where non-certificate holders can't access them.
-
Ammunition Storage: Section 1 ammunition (for rifles) legally must be locked away separately from your firearms. You can do this with an integrated, lockable ammo compartment built into the cabinet, or by fitting a separate BS7558-approved ammo safe.
2. Choosing the Right Location Finding the right spot is just as important as the strength of the cabinet itself. Your FLO will want to see that the installation keeps your guns out of plain sight and away from easy access points:
-
Out of View: Position the cabinet where casual visitors or people looking through ground-floor windows won't spot it. Bedrooms, utility spaces, or lockable under-stairs cupboards work really well. Top tip: If finding a hidden spot in your chosen room is tricky, using a stylish freestanding room divider or screen is a quick and effective way to keep the cabinet completely out of view!
-
Solid Masonry or Structural Timber: The cabinet should ideally be anchored into a solid external brick wall or internal load-bearing wall.
-
Avoid Damp Spots: Cold garages, damp cellars, or unheated exterior walls can cause condensation and rust on your actions and barrels over time. It is always best to choose a dry, temperature-stable room inside your main home.
3. Practical Cabinet Fixing A cabinet is only ever as secure as the wall behind it. FLOs routinely give cabinets a firm tug during an inspection to check there is zero movement.
-
Flush Mounting: It is always best to cut away a neat section of skirting board so the back of the cabinet sits completely flat against bare masonry or timber. Leaving a gap behind the cabinet creates a leverage point for pry bars.
-
High-Strength Chemical Anchoring: We recommend and use high-performance chemical resin anchors or heavy-duty expanding anchor bolts set directly into solid brickwork. Chemical fixings create an incredibly strong bond with the substrate without expanding and cracking surrounding brickwork.
Adding Electronic Security to Your Cabinet
For standard home setups, a properly installed cabinet is usually all that is required. However, adding electronic security offers fantastic peace of mind, instant smartphone alerts, and early warning protection.
If you hold higher quantities, own high-value guns, or simply want to know your cabinet is monitored 24/7, we design and fit custom electronic security tailored specifically for gun cabinets:
-
Dedicated 24/7 Cabinet Zones: We can integrate your cabinet into your home alarm system as a dedicated 24/7 zone. This means the cabinet stays fully armed even when your main home alarm is switched off during the day.
-
Smart Sensors: We supply and install specialised contacts and vibration sensors from leading manufacturers. Every installation is different and each one will be assessed for the perfect solution prior to installation.
-
Smart Alerts & Dual-Path Monitoring: Get instant notifications sent directly to your phone the second your cabinet door is opened or physical tampering is detected alongside our dual-path (IP/4G) monitoring to an approved Alarm Receiving Centre for continual protection, 24x7.
